A retired railroad porter and church deacon, George is the unofficial mayor of the block. His character reflects J.C.'s quiet, mischievous nature. Named after George Whiting, a close friend and collaborator of J.C.

Brenda Braxton (Billie)

The strong, resilient woman George left behind 30 years ago. Inspired by Pig Foot Mary, she rose from street vendor to restaurant owner. Named after Billie Holiday, who recorded several of J.C.'s songs, including TRAV’LIN.

A fast-talking numbers runner and self-promoter, Archie is Roz's long-time partner and a ladies' man. Inspired by J.C.'s acquaintances, including Joe Louis and Fats Waller.
